March Perch Fishing on Cass Lake **NEW 2010*
“Cass Lake Fishing Report”3-8-10
Perch fishing has picked up quite a bit in the last few days on Cass. Good numbers of 9-12 inch perch have been showing up. The best time of day has been from 10 am until 2 pm. I was out today for a couple hours with my wife and daughter and we had a blast. We must have caught 80 fish in that time and kept around half of them. The water is very clear on Cass and it is a lot of fun to actually watch the fish hover around your bait and pick and choose the ones you want to catch. Perch pattern jigging spoons with a minnow head or tail worked well. The warmer weather has melted off a lot of the snow on the lake and travel is fairly easy now. The fishing should be pretty good now, right up to the end of the ice fishing season. Good luck to everyone!! Take care…..Chad
Cass Lake Fishing Report3-4-10
The late ice perch fishing on Cass should get pretty good in the next couple of weeks. I have been out looking around for the last couple of days and found most of the nicer sized (10 inch+) still in deeper water 30-50ft. As the snow cover begins melting off in the next week or two the fish should get more aggressive and move up onto the shallower flats. If anyone out there is interested in some March perch fishing on Cass I have a couple of my 8x18, 4 person shacks on the lake. Give me a call on my cell (218) 556-0823 or e-mail for the most up to date reports and more info. Good luck to everyone during the late ice season and be careful out there! Take care…..Chad Upper Red Report3-1-10
The walleye fishing on Upper Red during the month of February was fair to slow for most of the month. The numbers gradually got better towards the end of the season. Most people caught enough for a fish fry or two and also took home a few. The big pike action was pretty consistent throughout February. Quite a few fish in the 36-42 inch range were caught and released. Some nice perch were also taken but not in any big numbers. The crappie bite in my area was pretty quiet most of the winter. One or two would show up once in a while, but that was about it. Sounds like the North Shore is starting to kick out some better numbers if you are willing to drill a bunch of holes and dial in on them. Usually there are a couple areas near the reservation line that produce some decent numbers of crappies this time of year, but they never materialized this year. Hope everyone that stayed with me this ice season had a decent time and enjoyed their stay on Red Lake. Hope to see you again next year! If anyone is interested, I will be running a couple houses down on Cass Lake for some late ice Perch fishing. Cass has a very good perch population, with many in the 10-12 inch range. Give me a call or e-mail if you would like more details. Take care……Chad
“Upper Red Report” 2-5-10
The walleye fishing on Upper Red has slowed considerably in the last week. People are still catching walleyes, but are waiting longer between bites and working quite a bit harder to get their limits. Quite a few fish have been coming in to look at the baits and not cooperating. Things should pick up a bit as we get further into February. The evening bite has been the best lately, with a few fish showing up throughout the day as well. No best bait or lure lately either. Just keep experimenting with what has worked in the past and the fish will let you know what they want. A crappie or two has been showing up in the buckets over the last month, but no consistency. The pike action has been sporadic also. One or two 36+ inch fish have been showing up every week, but no big numbers. Good Luck!! Take care……Chad
1-21-10
The walleye fishing on Upper Red so far during the month of January has been pretty good on the most part. When the bite is good 20-50 walleyes a day have been caught in most houses. When the bite is slower 10-20 a day has been the norm. The bite seems to go in 3-4 day streaks. Numbers will be better than average for a few days and then slow down for about the same time. There hasn’t been any one thing that has been working best for the walleyes. One day jigging works well and the next day the less you move the bait the better. The best advice is to bring a good variety of spoons, jigs, colored plain hooks etc. & keep experimenting until the fish tell you what they want on that particular day. The pike action has been pretty quiet in the area we have been fishing the last couple weeks. I did have a customer catch a 36 incher yesterday and a few smaller ones during the week. A few nice perch have also been showing up in the buckets as well. An occasional crappie shows up now & again also. Good luck to everyone & take care!!..........Chad 12-14-09
The fishing on the south shore in my area has been so, so. This morning we went out and caught 6 walleyes in a couple hours. We went back out in the evening for an hour or so, and caught 2 more. All the walleyes we caught were in the 15-17 inch range and were caught on a chartreuse Swedish pimple tipped with a minnow head or various glow jigs tipped with a minnow on the rattle reels. We had quite a few lookers also that we couldn’t quite entice into biting. The 9-10 ft. range has been the best for us. The ice conditions are very good! I drilled quite a few holes this morning, checking ice thickness between shore and the two houses I pulled out. The most I found was 14 inches and the least was 10 inches. I have still been going out on the ATV, but will probably drive the truck out tomorrow or the next day. We have caught a few pike also. Nothing too big though. Most of the pike have been in the 2-7lb range.
Good Luck & Take care!!...................Chad
“Upper Red Report” 12-03-09
The weather is finally turning colder and the ice is forming fast on Upper Red. I was up there today and could not see open water from the south shore. It looked like there was ice piling up about a mile or two out. This is probably where there is still some open water & the wind is piling the ice up. This will probably be where we find some crappies this year also, if we find any? We should be able to walk out in the next couple days and do some early season ice fishing. The forecast for the next few days is pretty cold, so the lake should totally freeze over pretty quick. I will keep you posted on the ice conditions & fishing reports on the south shore of Upper Red from now until the end of February or so. For those of you who are looking to book an ice fishing trip to Upper Red this winter, I still have openings for all weekends in February and plenty of openings during the weekdays in January. My weekends in January are totally booked right now & I still have openings just after the New Year. It should be another really good year for walleyes & big pike on Upper Red once again. Good Luck in your early ice adventures and be careful out there! Take care…….Chad
